Morpho Blue License for Polkadot Parachains

Note: Sorry, I’m a new user on this forum and I’m only allowed to include two links in my post. If you want to learn about specific projects or terms related to Polkadot or parachain, you’ll need to search for them yourself.

Abstract

This proposal explores whether MorphoDAO can grant a license allowing EVM-compatible parachains on Polkadot to integrate the Morpho Blue protocol.

Introduction

I am part of the Darwinia Network, an EVM-compatible parachain on Polkadot. Since Morpho Blue is a well-designed lending and borrowing protocol, we aim to integrate it into Darwinia. Other EVM-compatible Polkadot parachains might also benefit from Morpho Blue’s features. Inspired by MIP 83 - Morpho Blue license 🐻, I wonder if MorphoDAO could offer a license for these parachains of the Polkadot. If so, I will propose a similar plan in the Polkadot community forum to gather interest. If the MorphoDAO approve this proposal, the Polkadot treasury might fund the license fee for all interested parachains.

Polkadot has a strong community and more than 20 parachains. Many already support EVM, including Moonbeam, Acala, Asar, Darwinia, and Hydration. Additionally, the Polkadot Asset Hub may soon introduce EVM support (see Should we allow EVM compatible contracts on Asset Hub? | Polkassembly). Integrating Morpho Blue across Polkadot could benefit both Polkadot and the Morpho ecosystem.

Next Steps

  1. Determine the license fee and acceptable payment methods.
Both the exact amount and supported tokens should be clearly stated, as the Berachain proposal did not specify exact figures.

  2. Clarify the license specifications.
Define the duration, scope of code repos, and support details to ensure a smooth integration for EVM-compatible parachains on Polkadot.

Final Thoughts

We look forward to a potential collaboration between Morpho Blue and Polkadot. With clear terms and community support, this partnership could yield substantial benefits for all involved. Let’s see what the community thinks!

Thank you for the proposal!

As you mentioned in the “Next Steps” section of the proposal, we believe more clarification is needed before we can evaluate it properly.

From our perspective, the decision will highly depend on both the amount (and structure) of the license fee, as well as the level of support to be required.

While the proposal refers to ‘Polkadot Parachains’, the scope is somewhat unclear. The level of support required from core contributors will depend on how many chains you plan to deploy Morpho Blue to, and this should be proportional to the amount of the license fee.

We believe it would be more efficient to have the discussion after clarifying these points.

That makes sense. I created another proposal in the Polkadot community at Introduce Morpho License to Polkadot Parachains - Ecosystem - Polkadot Forum to gather feedback, which may take some time. At least, we should provide a list of parachains that plan to use this license. I’ll update here if there are any valuable update.
